In 2017 my husband and I were delighted to know that our son and his wife living in Perth, were expecting their first child in 2018. We live in Hawke’s Bay, NZ so we mostly have virtual contact.

Two months later we received a brief text from our son telling us that following tests, their wee babe had a 99.9% chance of being be born with severe abnormalities, consequentially they would never live a ‘normal’ life. It was devastating news and the specialists were strongly urging a termination. This was never an option.

We felt helpless, so we became pro-active by adding a Saturday morning Mass to our weekly schedule and by praying the rosary each day for this wee baby. Our heartache and despair slowly turned to hope and belief that a miracle was possible.

Amniotic tests were repeated twice more and each time results improved. We knew our Lord was blessing this little one as she continued to develop. As time went on our prayer included the paediatric team as they continued to press strongly for termination.

Our granddaughter was born full-term in June 2018, already loved, bringing much joy and happiness to our whole family. We thank God for this gift of our miracle granddaughter.
