I Know Your Pain

My name is Liz, a wife, mother and grandmother, who has walked with the Lord through the ups and downs of life for a long time now.

This encounter with the Lord, did not come out of any spiritual moment of prayer, nor in my seeking of the Lord’s presence, but unexpectantly in the day, in my time of illness.

When I retired from teaching, I became part of a group in the city who were training to be voluntary hospital chaplains. Unfortunately, near the end of this course I contracted shingles.

One morning as I was struggling to sit up in bed, I became warm throughout my body. This was not the heat of the fever I had been feeling but of being wrapped in great love. I sensed the words I know your pain.

As I raised my head, my eyes were drawn to the small crucifix on the wall in my bedroom and I was overcome with the certainty of the Lord’s love for me.

I have gone on to be a voluntary chaplain with the same certainty that all the pain and suffering of the patients I meet, is truly known by God.
